When to plant tulips. The old saying is to plant your spring flowering bulbs twice as deep as the bulb is high. Wait until the soil is 60 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. Plant your Tulips a little deeper because the soil will be cooler.
Its best to plant tulips when the ground is cool which means the best time to plant depends on the climate. In the North this will be in September or October in the South in October or November. One way to give your tulips a fuller look is to bouquet plant them.
Once early spring comes around your tulips will start peeking above the surface. In warmer climates its better to plant late in December. Tulip bulbs should be planted in the fall.
When to Plant Tulips. Plant from mid- to late autumn this is later than most bulbs but a late planting can help reduce problems with the disease tulip fire. Southern regions of the world are better off planting tulips between December and January.
Bright bold and colourful Tulips are one of the most popular spring-flowering bulbs that gardeners plant in autumn. Plant at least twice the bulbs width apart and at a depth of two or three times the bulbs height. Sometimes even early winter December works best if you live in mild winter areas.
Many gardeners may think that you need to get all your bulbs in the ground by October but this isnt the case. A good rule of thumb is to plant your tulips after your first light frost and about 6 weeks before the usual date of your first heavy freeze. If youre growing tulips in pots you need to plant fresh bulbs each year.
