Watering New Sod

According to some vendors most homeowners water their sod lawns too often but not deeply enough. The goal is to keep new sod wet like a sponge until roots form and you feel resistance due to roots tacking your new sod to the ground. The roots start to extend themselves into the soil below.
After the sod has rooted keep it watered enough to promote healthy growth. Typically new sod should be watered two to four times each day for the first seven to 10 days. Water should have penetrated through the soil layer of the new sod and the ground should be moistwet with a slight give when you walk across it.
New sod requires a considerable amount of water to keep it healthy so plan on watering more than once a day to prevent the soil from drying but always check the roots to prevent rotting roots. Morning is ideal with lower wind speeds and less water is lost to evaporation. Best time to water new sod.
